How do you fix them when something goes wrong, and how do you keep them working? Technicians will meet at the Academy Bus facility in Richmond, VA, for Hands-on Maintenance Sessions. A Boxed lunch will be provided. NOTE: There is a $ 25.00-per-person fee for this session for technicians only. Operators are asked to ensure that someone from their company completes Marketplace II.

FAM #1 Liberty Lives Here-Step into the heart of American history with a morning exploring two of the region’s most iconic sites. Begin with a guided tour of the Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson and home to the nation’s oldest legislative assembly, where you will see historic statuary, paintings, rare artifacts, and beautifully restored chambers. Then experience a full reenactment at St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry delivered his famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech during the pivotal 1775 debate among the Founding Fathers. The tour concludes with lunch, offering time to reflect. Tour Logistics and Accessibility: Your bus will drop you off directly at each venue entrance for easy access. At the State Capitol, you'll find ramps and elevators that provide access to all floors, and our guided tour includes plenty of opportunities to sit and rest. When we visit St. John's Church, you can enter the church grounds either through the main entrance with brick steps and handrails, or through the step-free accessible entrance with an elevator on 24th Street. Once on the grounds, brick-lined paths will lead you to the church building. Inside, you'll experience the indoor reenactment from traditional church pews, and you might find yourself seated next to a Founding Father! All venues throughout our tour accommodate wheelchairs and mobility devices, and are wheelchair-accessible Restrooms are conveniently available at every stop. FAM # 2 Voices of Resilience: Richmond’s Story - Step into Richmond’s powerful Black history with Gary L. Flowers, one of our most respected storytellers and historians. Your experience begins along the James River at Rocketts Landing, where Gary meets you and sets the stage for a journey that traces the region’s role in the domestic slave trade and the resilience that followed. As he joins you on the bus, you will travel through historic neighborhoods while hearing stories that bring to life the river, the streets, and the people who shaped this city. The tour continues through sites tied to Lumpkin’s Jail and onward to Historic Jackson Ward, once known as Black Wall Street and the Harlem of the South. Along the way, Gary brings to life the educational, religious, economic, and social institutions that made Jackson Ward a national model of Black entrepreneurship and community strength. The experience includes time to explore the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The tour concludes with a relaxed group lunch, offering space to reflect and connect. This is more than a tour. It is an opportunity to see Richmond through the voices and stories that helped define it. Tour Logistics and Accessibility: On this comfortable riding tour, you will enjoy the journey from an air-conditioned bus complete with snacks and bottled water. While most of the experience is from your comfortable seat, we'll make several stops at significant historic landmarks where you can step off the bus to explore. After our introduction at the Black History Museum, you will have time to discover the exhibits at your own pace. The museum staff is certified in disability etiquette training by Visitable, ensuring a welcoming experience for all visitors. Accessible restrooms are available at the museum, and we're happy to provide an additional restroom break at the Motorcoach Welcome Center as needed. FAM #3: Whitewater Rafting on the James River - Experience Riverside Outfitters’ signature whitewater rafting trip as you paddle through Richmond’s urban forest and into the heart of the city. Along the way, keep an eye out for bald eagles, great blue herons, turtles, gar, and other wildlife that call the James River home. This one-of-a-kind FAM experience features the only Class III–IV whitewater rapids in the country that run through a major city center. After riding the waves, swap stories back at the Riverside Outfitters shop while enjoying a beverage and a gourmet boxed lunch from Café Zata. It’s a memorable way to cap off an unforgettable day on the James River! Tour Logistics & Accessibility: Please meet the bus at 8:30 a.m. already wearing appropriate attire (clothes that can get wet, tennis shoes, water shoes, or Teva-style sandals); flip flops are not permitted. River-friendly Sunscreen and water are available on-site. You will be asked to leave all personal belongings (cell phones, wallets, keys, change of clothes, towels, etc.) on the bus. The bus will drop you at the Riverside Outfitters shop, where restrooms are available before boarding the Riverside bus that takes you to the river. Life jackets and helmets will be provided and are required to participate. The helmets have GoPro mounts if you'd like to bring a GoPro. A professional photographer will be taking pictures. That will be available for purchase after the trip. The water temperature will be in the 80s so no wetsuits will be needed. A link to an online waiver will be provided and must be completed before the day of the trip. You will be on the water for approximately 2.5 hours. Professional guides will be in each boat leading the way and making sure y'all have a great time! This FAM experience is not accessible to wheelchair users. The trip is designed for those comfortable with moving water, and novice swimmers are welcome.
